Mercedes have withdrawn their appeal over Max Verstappen world title win

Red Bull driver Max Verstappen was confirmed 2021 Formula 1 World Champion after Mercedes withdrew his appeal during Sunday’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

Verstappen secured the victory he needed in the Middle East after race director Michael Masi controversially allowed another race lap after using the safety car.
Several wheeled cars were moved out of the way to allow Verstappen, on new tyres, to overtake Lewis Hamilton, putting the Briton in second place in the race and in the standings respectively.

Mercedes had two protests dismissed in the hours following the race, but had the right to appeal before Thursday’s official trophy ceremony.
However, in light of the FIA’s acceptance that what happened in Abu Dhabi did not benefit the sport and left several potential future events open for interpretation, Mercedes ended its attempt to overturn the result.

In a lengthy Twitter statement, Mercedes said it “appealed in the interests of sports justice” but was pleased with the “constructive dialogue” that should help “create clarity for the future”.
Mercedes added that it has sent its congratulations to Verstappen, saying it has “sincere respect” for his achievements this season.
