Lionel Messi ‘would love’ to return to Barcelona as a sporting director

Lionel Messi says he would like to return to Barcelona as a sporting director in the future.

Messi, 34, took off from the Nou Camp in August after over 20 years, joining Paris St-Germain.

While he isn’t pondering retirement yet, he “couldn’t want anything more than to be a brandishing chief eventually”.

He added: “I couldn’t say whether it will be in Barcelona or on the other hand on the off chance that it will be something different. In case there’s the possibility, I might want to return and contribute.”

In a meeting with Spanish paper Sport, the six-time Ballon d’Or champ said: “I generally said that I couldn’t imagine anything better than to have the option to help the club.

“In case there is plausible, I might want to contribute again on the grounds that it’s the club that I love and I would cherish for it to keep progressing admirably, to keep developing and to keep being truly outstanding on the planet.”

Messi added: “We are going to live in Barcelona again and our life will be there.

“It’s what my significant other needs and what I need. I don’t have the foggiest idea when my agreement with PSG closes however we’ll return to Barcelona to live.”

Messi scored 672 objectives for Barcelona, however withdrew when his agreement lapsed as mounting obligations made it unthinkable for the club to bear the cost of another arrangement.

Discussing retirement isn’t on his plan, and he would not preclude playing on past the Qatar World Cup the following winter, by which time he will be 35.

“After all that has happened to me, I just live day to day, year after year,” he said. “I do not know what is going to happen at the World Cup or after it. I am not thinking about it.”

Messi also dismissed suggestions he refused to play for free, claiming he did everything he could to remain at the club.

“The truth is, as I explained when I left, I did everything possible to stay,” he added.

“Never at any moment did they ask me to play for free. They asked me to reduce my salary by 50% and I did it without any problem.”
